Though no one is reading this, I feel I must continue. Here's a second installment:
She had no other choice. She seemed to flee uncomfortable situations quite easily this way. She was a woman, men expected weakness. So, she forced her entire body to become dead-weight and dropped to the ground. She listened while Jacob fretted over her limp body and whined like an irritating child for help. A man, whose voice was unfamiliar to her, transported her easily to the room.
With blinking eyes and both hands grasping her head, she opened her eyes in her roomy compartment on the St. Mary now crowded with empathetic faces. Her father, Lt. John Cross, and her step-sister were sitting anxiously on the blue cushioned bench by her bed. She felt guilty for worrying them but she couldn‘t drop the act this far in. She glanced about the room drowsily examining the faces of her friends and family, however, next to Captain Harold Smith stood the man who must have been the unfamiliar voice that had carried her in. He was tall and very handsome and though Amorah could feel her cheeks beginning to burn she could not look away.
She was intrigued by his perfectly unkempt appearance. Despite his efforts, the dark curl’s of his hair seemed to fall unfailingly into his large brown eyes. His skin was tanned from the sea and not even his clean white shirt could distract her from the muscle that lie beneath it. She was unsure if she liked the mystery that his dark characteristics seemed to cloak him in or how his appeal seemed to grow each moment.
The corners of her pale lips twitched ever so slightly and she knew she was grinning. The man offered her a crooked smile that could have made her laugh aloud, had she not realized the sudden intensity of attention focusing in on her.
Cheeks ablaze, Amorah sheepishly squeaked out the first words that came to mind, “What h-happened?”
This comment caused Jacob to turn away in his own bout of embarrassment, but her father held her gaze, which seemed to express the deepest of concern. He spoke slowly but by the time his words came, her own thoughts had consumed her.
Why!? Why did I ask that question! I know perfectly well what happened. Jacob proposed, HE PROPOSED TO ME! We’re childhood friends, I can’t have romantic feelings for him, besides I find him perfectly annoying.
“Hhumph!” she concurred aloud.
I shouldn’t be so harsh though, he has been rather sweet as of late, if I had been just a tad bit more polite, I may have enjoyed our recent interactions. I could give him a chance--wait no! I can not just toy with his emotions like that! Marriage is a holy, love-filled oath. One does not toy with oaths… but maybe I’ll find myself falling for Jacob if I allow him the opportunity. Besides he is very good-looking.
“But he’s just so damned annoying!” Amorah announced with exasperation.
“Amorah! My dear what are you harrumphing and swearing about? This is not the appropriate time nor place for that sort of language, in fact there is never an appropriate time or place for a lady to use such coarse words!” His displeasure had swelled from his throat upwards, warranting his face an angry red color.
But once again she was not listening, she needed to clear her head. She could not think lucidly with so many distractions, her little stunt had only bought her so much time. She stood quickly, albeit a little to quickly. She rubbed her head and groaned but did not stray from her path, she was leaving this room and no one would stop her.
“Wait!” A man’s voice called from down the corridor, but Amorah did not stop, in fact her pace quickened.
“For the love of--Ah! Would you just wait a moment?” The voice continued, “Please…Amorah is it?”
Amorah’s footsteps faltered. The man wants to marry me yet he can’t recall my name!? She thought.
Hi Carolyn, I've read both instalments and I can offer you some advice, if you'd like. I've read (and written) a lot of romance and I'd like to hear where you're going with the story. Drop me an email if you want to talk about it.
